Photojournalist & photo editor specializing in sports & action photography
Katharine Lotze is a photojournalist and picture editor based in Southern California, currently working as a senior picture desk editor for Getty Images.
She lives and works between Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley, and her work for Getty Images has been seen in The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, Buzzfeed News, the Huffington Post, and more. As a picture editor, she sees hundreds to thousands of images per day across news, sports and entertainment, and produces original video content for Getty Images' 1.5 million Instagram followers. She's edited everything from the Oscars to the Olympics.
Prior to Getty, she worked as a staff photographer at the Santa Clarita Valley Signal, covering major and minor breaking news and sports, including large-scale fires, elections, national presidential debates, and more. She's also done some writing & reporting.
A former college track & field athlete, Katharine is passionate about covering sports, particularly women athletes, and believes women's sports deserve equal coverage by media organizations, and that visual coverage can help drive overall coverage of women athletes. Her dream assignments include covering Diamond League track meets, World Athletics Championships, Olympic track, gymnastics, and surfing (of course), and the Jamaican high school national track and field championships.
In 2018, she was runner-up for the inaugural Shoot Like Shirley Award. Her images have won the PPAGLA's Best UCLA Sports Photo four years running (2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021). In 2022, she won a special merit award in gymnastics in the World Sports Photography Awards. Her work has also been recognized by NPPA's Best of Photojournalism, the California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspapers contest, and the Los Angeles Center of Photography.
She has served as an early-career and student mentor through the NPPA and Las Fotos.
When she's not working, you'll likely find her at the beach listening to a podcast while photographing surfers, clocking miles in her running shoes training for half or full marathons, or snuggling with her cats.
She's quick on the reply, so don't hesitate to reach out!
